Born in 1949 in Patiala, southeastern Punjab, Gurcharan Singh started his artistic career at the Government College of Arts & Crafts, Chandigarh, in 1973.
Gurcharan's signature paintings of ordinary folk, men, women, children and animals often reflect the plight of the underprivileged, the social underclass, the invisible and the exploited in India.

His passion for colorful and large scale works continued, and he has held solo exhibitions in several art galleries in New Delhi, Mumbai, Paris, London and Seoul. His works have also been shown at the International Biennale in Tokyo (1984), at the Contemporary Art Show in Seoul (1986) as well as the Festival of Contemporary Art in London (1988).
