Henry Avery, born in 1906 in Margatan, North Carolina, was an African-American muralist, still life and portrait painter who moved to Chicago in the 1930's. He influenced Chicago's art community, but seemed to disappear from the art scene in the 1950's, and few details about his life have surfaced.
He is known as a painter, sculptor, and muralist, having completed mural projects for the Masonic Temple and Regal Theater in Chicago and the Civic Center in Alton, Illinois. He was in the easel and mural painting departments of the Illinois Art Project of the Works Project Administration, and was one of the founding members of the South Side Community Art Center in Bronzeville, a part of Chicago.
