I have been doing some research on a jockey (Chris Green) who won the Aintree Grand National horse race in 1850 on Abd-el-Kader. I know  from press reports at the time that both horse and rider were painted by Henry T Davis, for the Irish owner Joseph Osborne. Unfortunately neither the painting nor one of the engravings known to have been  made from it have surfaced yet. But I did notice that you welcome biographies of painters and I can at least help you there....

Henry Thomas Davis was born at Hackney, Middlesex (now NE London) c.1817. Neither his parentage nor whether he was formally trained as an artist is known. Out of the seven English censuses between 1841 and 190  ...  Displaying 750 of 2425 characters.
