The German painter Hugo Vogel studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under
Wilhelm Sohn and Eduard von Gebhardt. In Dusseldorf he was a member of
the Association of Artists 'Malkasten'. After a long stay in Italy, he
moved to Berlin, where in 1886, he was offered a position as professor
at the Berlin Academy. When he lost this professorship in 1892, he
joined the 'Gruppe der Elf'.
He undertook extensive study trips to
Paris, Spain, Northern Africa, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands. He
achieved fame by his frescoes of historical topics, such as in the town
halls of Berlin and Hamburg. During the First World War, he accompanied
