As a young man he made several trades to help his family, as a painter of tiles and fans, silversmith and hatter. In 1864 he entered the School of Fine Arts of Valencia and in 1876 he obtained a pension to study in Rome. He won numerous awards in life and worked as a teacher at the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos and the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid.
