James Jarvaise was born in New York City and lived in Chicago and Pittsburgh before moving to California in 1946, where he first lived in Los Angeles and from 1969 in Santa Barbara. He has held many teaching positions and from 1991 served as Head of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Oxnard College.
He was educated at Carnegie Tech. in Pittsburgh, PA.. Ecole Dart/ Biarritz, France with Fernand Legere, and earned a B.F.A from the University of Southern California in 1952, studied at Yale in 1953 and earned an M.F.A. in 1954 from the University of Southern California.

James Jarvaise was born in NYC on Feb. 16, 1931. Jarvaise was active in Los Angeles from the 1940s. He obtained his M.F.A. at USC and taught at that school (1955-62) and Chouinard Art Institute (1965-67). While in Santa Barbara in 1969-73, he was chairman of the painting department at the Art Institute. He later headed the art department at Oxnard College. He currently lives in Santa Barbara.
