James Coulter

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following, submitted May 2004, is from the artist whose website is:

James M. Coulter was born in Oklahoma City and raised in rural Kansas where much of his childhood was spent in the outdoors fishing, hunting and camping. During this formative time of his life, he developed a deep admiration and respect for nature. It was at this time that his initial aspiration to become an artist was realized.

He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Arizona State University in 1981, and since has studied with master painters at the Scottsdale Art School, where he is now an instructor himself. Over many years of painting he has found himself drawn to the beauty of nature and subsequently to the plein-air method of oil painting, which means painting directly outdoors on location.

Coulter lives full time in a recreational vehicle traveling through the Southwest and hiking to achieve an intimacy with his subject matter, which would otherwise be unobtainable.

A list of some of the well-known American plein-air painters with whom Coulter has studied are: Ken Auster, Ken Backhaus, John Budicin, Scott Christensen, Len Chmiel, Mark Daily, Tim Allen Lawson, Kevin MacPherson, Ned Mueller, R.S. Riddick, Ray Roberts, Richard Schmid, Matt Smith, George Strickland, Curt Walters and Skip Whitcomb.

Coulter has molded his lifestyle to best fit the passion he has for his art. He strives to constantly improve his skills to facilitate the communication from himself through his paintings to the viewer. These are not only techniques, but also experiences gained through this struggle to reach higher levels in his overall artistic knowledge and abilities.
