Biography
Jean-Louis Gregoire

Jean-Louis Grégoire was born and died in Paris. Training under Jean Salmson at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts*, he exhibited at the Paris Salon* from 1867 and became one of the first Associates of the Artistes Français.

The work, L'Allégro, is one of several groups by Grégoire that take music as their theme, others being his figure of Mozart enfant, tuning his violin, and Un artiste au XVIIe siècle, also portraying a violinist.

Compositionally, L'Allégro has affinities with works by Salmson, in which two figures are depicted in movement, and it is also related to other works by Grégoire, such as La Confidence, Perseus and Andromeda and Helen and Paris.
