Jean Leppien

Jean Leppien was a noted French artist who began painting abstract art in 1927. He employed various media, ranging from drawing to monotypes and oil paintings. In 1929 he joined the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he was a pupil of Albers, of Kandinsky and Paul Klee.

In Berlin (1931-32), he worked with Moholy-Nagy and learned photography at the School Itten. In 1933 he left Nazi Germany and settled in Paris.

When the Nazis came into power, Jean Leppien joined the French Foreign Legion, hating Nazism more than he hated war. Demobilized, he joined the French Resistance but was arrested and deported. All of his work up until 1944 was lost, seized by the Gestapo and destroyed as degenerate art.
