Jesus Vilallonga

Biography from the Archives of askART

Jesus Carlos de Vilallonga is a painter, muralist, printmaker, designer and sculptor who was born in Santa Coloma de Farners, Spain (in the northeast near Barcelona).  He moved to Montreal, Canada in 1954, and lived there until the 1960's when he began dividing his time between there and Barcelona.  When his Canadian dealer of 30 years, Max Stern  of the Dominion Gallery died in 1988, Vilallonga moved to Barcelona permanently, where he still lives and works.

His mediums are fresco, oil, egg tempera, acrylic, gouache, watercolour (especially in mid 1950's Montreal work), collage, etching, lithography, screen printing, digital art and mixed mediums.  His sculptures are in bronze and aluminum.  He has also designed silver jewelry, textiles and ceramics.  His subjects are faces, portraits, figures, fantasy, urban scenes, social commentary, genre scenes and landscape.   His styles are surrealist, symbolist and representational.

He studied at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona (1949) and at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris (1952 -1954) under Marcel Gromaire (see AskART), who's influence is evident in much of Vilallonga's work.

He has exhibited in numerous commercial galleries in Canada and the United States as well as in; London, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Rome, and Vienna.  His works are in many private, corporate and public collections.  Some of the public collections are; the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, the Montreal Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Quebec (Quebec City), the Vancouver Art Gallery (B.C.), the Edmonton Art Gallery (Alberta), Concordia University (Montreal), the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris, the Museo Nacional de Arte Contemporaneo (Madrid), the NASA art collection (Florida), the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (Barcelona), the Museum of Modern Art (Barcelona), and about two dozen more. An example of his murals can be seen at the entrance to the Faculty of Law at the University of Montreal.

He is listed in The Collector's Dictionary of Canadian Artists at Auction (2001), by Anthony R. Westbridge and Diana L. Bodnar, published by Westbridge Publications Ltd. (4 volumes) and in the 1999 and 2006 versions of E. Benezit, published by Grund.  There are also the books Vilallonga Les Lieux Du Reve, Cloister of Dreams (1993), by Luis de Moura Sobral, published by Broquet, La Prairie, Quebec (303 pgs, colour and B&W); Livre d'heures (2005), by Jesus de Vilallonga, published by Lemeac, Canada (118pgs, B&W); and Vilallonga - Jesus Carlos Vilallonga (1971), by Robert Descharnes, published by Editorial Juventud, Barcelona (100 pgs, colour and B&W).
