Johann Ulrich


The landscape and marine painter Johann Jakob Ulrich was trained in Paris by Jean-Victor Bertin and Theodore Gudin. At the Paris Salon of 1824 he became acquainted with the work of Constable, which was to have a lasting influence on him. From 1828-1830 he lived and the artist worked in Italy, where he was in Rome, Naples and Sicily. The open-air sketch is carried out in a free duct; The artist does not get lost in details, his focus is on the detection of light and atmosphere. The loose, transparent color application and the muted, earthy flavor reminiscent of the Technique German and English plein air painters such as Constable and Dillis, the Ulrich visited in 1832 and 1835 in England.
