African-American artist and arts educator John Miller Howard was born in Alcorn, Mississippi in 1908. After graduating from Alcorn College in 1934, he began his career as a principal of a school in Toomsuba, Mississippi, where in addition to his duties overseeing the education of students, he also served as a public health officer. Howard continued to work as a commercial artist on the side.
After serving in this capacity for some time, he received a scholarship for summer study at Atlanta University. Here, he studied under Hale Woodruff. Howard made such a favorable impression on Woodruff that he was offered another scholarship and a job teaching at the Laboratory High School connected with the university.
