Born in Manhattan in 1924, John Styga attended the first commercial art high school in New York City, the School of Industrial Arts. While in school he did adventure drawings for cartoon magazines. After this schooling, he worked as an apprentice for one of the three biggest art studio's in NYC.
In 1942, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps Twelfth Air Force B25 Bomber Group. He flew sixty-four missions, received nine Air medals and two presidential citations. After the war, he returned to New York City and went to The Art Students League under the GI veteran's bill.
