Biography from the Archives of askART

A portrait painter whose work includes commissions for the Argentine Embassy as well as many commissions in the United States, Margaret Sargent has lived primarily in Washington state and California.  By 2006, her studio was in Los Angeles.

She studied at the University of California in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947 and in 1956 took watercolor classes in Tokyo, Japan.  She also studied in New York with Herbert Adams and with Marcos Blahove in Fairfax, Virginia.  Before becoming a dedicated painter, she was an actress and singer in Hollywood, where she had grown up in an entertainment environment because her father was Cecil Holland, Hollywood's first make-up artist.  Acting in day-time  television shows led to her assignment to paint portraits of leading actresses for the soap opera Living.  She has also done portraits of motion-picture personalities such as Lew Wasserman and Jules Stein and of the parents of Microsoft founder, Bill Gates.

Sargent is married to a descendant of the portrait painter, John Singer Sargent.  Through her husband's military career, Sargent received commissions to paint military portraits of West Point personnel including General Alexander Hague, and the first female graduates of the Academy.
