German painter and watercolorist, Paul Barthel was born in Zwickau and received his artistic training at
the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden in 1877/78. He later continued his
studies at the ABK Berlin, where he attended the classes of Julius
Ehrentraut and Eugen Bracht.
Barthel then became temporarily active in
Dresden and mainly focused on watercolor painting. From 1881 to 1885 the
artist worked as a flower painter for the Kunstdruckanstalt Hagelsberg,
Berlin. During this time, Barthel also created landscapes and realized
decorations of walls and ceilings.
The artist finally moved to Bamberg
in 1922, where he was active as a restorer, among other things. In his
