A portrait and landscape painter and sculptor, Renne Hughes was a native Texan (b. October 18, 1941) and Western artist by heritage and inclination. He was educated at two universities- the University of Texas at Arlington and Texas Christian University.

He is best known as Official Texas State Artist awarded in 1977. His cover of The Cattleman, The New York Leukemia Poster Child, Cover of Paint Horse Journal and cover of Texas Monthly are just a few of his popular publications. His commissions however, are what really set him apart. Some of his most famous commissions include President Ronald Reagan, Ben Johnson, The World Quarter Horse Champion; Owner: Johnny Johnson, Yoshiki Yamosaki: President of Mazda Corp and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
