Sophie Mapes Tolles was the daughter of Professor James J. Mapes (1806 - 1866), a noted early agricultural scientist and the sister of Mary Mapes Dodge, a noted writer of children's books. Sophie was a native of the city of New York who studied under the tutelage of artist Peter Frederick Rothermel (1812 - 1895) (1) in Philadelphia. She also studied in schools associated with the National Academy and the Cooper Institute in New York, where she was awarded two medals for her work.
