Title:  Biographical information for Sophie Mapes Tolles (b. 1932/34 d. 1899), American artist.

Sophie Mapes Tolles was the daughter of Professor James J. Mapes (1806 - 1866), a noted early agricultural scientist and the sister of Mary Mapes Dodge, a noted writer of children's books.  Sophie was a native of the city of New York who studied under the tutelage of artist Peter Frederick Rothermel (1812 - 1895) (1) in Philadelphia.  She also studied in schools associated with the National Academy and the Cooper Institute in New York, where she was awarded two medals for her work.  At some point, Sophie spent two years in Paris as a pupil of √Čveriste Vidal Luminais (1821-1896), (2)  honing her skills by painting a  ...  Displaying 750 of 3287 characters.
