Painter and art teacher, Susan Godding spent her adult years as a single fine art professional in Rhode Island, and then at age forty-eight became a wife and stepmother, living the remainder of her life in Illinois and Nebraska. Her husband, three years younger, was George Alexander, a Methodist minister and widower with six children. Unlike most married women of that era, Susan retained use of her maiden name, Godding, likely because she had used it for so many years.
