The Swiss-born Philadelphia artist, Ulrich Augustus (U.A.) Hoegger (1844-1908), was best known for his painting of a burned-out music studio which he named "Verstummt." In a prophetic and ironically tragic event, the painting itself was first partially destroyed by fire in the artist's studio, and later totally destroyed in a fire that also claimed the life of the artist himself. Fortunately, a portion of the painting has been preserved in the form of a black and white engraving made soon after the first fire.

Hoegger was born in Switzerland in July, 1844. After studying art in Zurich, he emigrated to the United States in 1878 and settled in Philadelphia where made his living as a sign painter. He and his first wife, Maggie, had one  ...  Displaying 750 of 6559 characters.
