Biography from the Archives of askART

An outsider artist early in her career, Sonia Centeno Dainty was a poet and writer in addition to being an artist.  At age 12, she moved to New York City from her birthplace of Puerto Rico, and remained there until 1970 when she married James Albert Dainty and moved to England for five years.  Then returning to New York State in 1975, she lived in Greenwood Lake until 1984, when she moved to Monroe, New York.

As a young girl she was very sickly with asthma as well as impoverished, but showing early talent, began painting at age nine.  She took lessons at the Art Academy in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and after moving to New York City, enrolled at the Cardinal Spelman Center in 1964.  She also joined several youth groups, "including one sponsored by Mobilization For Youth and Channel Thirteen.  As a young girl Centeno entered many art shows on the Lower East Side, and was invited to exhibit at the Ten Street Gallery.  Plagued by constant poverty and poor living conditions, she was hospitalized several times, once for over a year for tuberculosis."

After her marriage and living in England, she did many commissioned portraits and landscapes, and then back in the United States, she continued painting, doing still lifes and cityscapes as well as portraits and landscapes.  She also traveled widely including to the Southwest, Canada and back to Puerto Rico.  By the 1990s, she was having vision problems but continued to paint.  She also did teaching at Boys and Girls Club of New York in the 1970s and 1980s.

Exhibitions included the Art Academy, Arecibo, Puerto Rico and the Cardinal Spelman Center in New York City, 1964.
