Born in New York on June 8, 1878. Earle was educated at Columbia and Oxford universities. His art studies were begun in Paris at Ecole des Beaux Arts, Académie Julian, and with James M. Whistler. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1901, he continued at the ASL in NYC. A poet, he published his first book of poems in 1910. Returning from a trip to Germany, he settled in Los Angeles in 1915. He then became active as an independent movie producer and director for silent pictures while painting landscapes and marines in his leisure. In 1925 he founded and edited the magazineWest Wind which dealt with literature, art, and poetry.
