An oil painting, the work of Miss Margaret Frederikson, depicting a portion of Elsinore castle in Denmark, the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet, was displayed Nov. 10 by Miss Elizabeth H. Graves to her senior English students who have been studying the drama. Miss Frederickson (sic), instructor of art in Monroe junior high school, made the painting from a thumbnail sketch, drawn by her when she toured Denmark on a bicycle in 1937.
She plans to enter the work in a contest. The canvas is 14 x 20 inches and has a lovely gold leaf frame tinged with green. The purpose of Miss Frederikson’s trip to Denmark was to visit her grandmother. Her itinerary included the Thorvoldsen museum as Thorvoldsen is a world-renowned sculptor, the Tivoli Amusement park, and Davidson’s restaurant where the menus were 4 feet long and contained the names of 195 varieties of sandwiches, each made of 4 different kinds of bread.
She also spent much of her leisure time sketching the 54 statues, which have been erected in Copenhagen. Miss Frederickson has studied art at the State University of Minnesota, the Stillwater Art colony in Minnesota under the direction of Josephine Lutz, in Duluth under David Ericson in More, Sweden and with the late Grand Wood of Iowa.
