Born in Germany on June 11, 1877. About 1916, Grebs settled in San Francisco where he worked as art director for the Foster & Kleiser Company (billboards). Later he taught and lectured at Stanford University and the San Francisco Art Institute.
The later part of his life was spent in Berkeley, CA where he was a founding member of the Cordonices Club.
Grebs died in Berkeley at his home at 137 Tamalpais Road on June 24, 1964.
