Born in San Pedro, Mexico on Aug. 1, 1891, Berta Hoerner grew up in New York and in 1909 moved to Seattle. She studied at the University of Washington School of Journalism, worked for photographer Edward S. Curtis, and apprenticed at Western Engraving Company in order to learn design and printing.
About 1914 she moved to San Francisco where she worked as a freelance fashion illustrator while studying at the California School of Fine Art. She painted many miniatures at her studio on Telegraph Hill and for awhile worked for the Bulletin
as artist for the woman's page.
She exhibited in San Francisco in 1918. The following year she married artist Elmer Hader and settled in Grand View-on-Hudson, NY wh
