Philip Illman was born in 1898, and died in 1992. I've been told that he studied at the National Academy, NYC, and the Art Students' League, NYC. He was a student, close friend and, I gather, sort of a protoge of George Luks, with whom he shared a studio both in NYC ( I think, if my memory serves me correctly, it was in the Gramercy Park area), and also upstate in Old Chatham, NY. (According to family lore, it was Luks who was largely responsible for Phillip's decision to marry my aunt Ruth, in spite of their mutual poverty, since it had become apparent to George that Phillip was miserable whenever he spent time apart from her, as when he was at Old Chatham.)
Phillip often spoke as well about a studio he had in the old Lincoln Center, but I am uncertain about the exact time when he was there, or whether or not this also may have been connected with Luks.
Phillip exhibited Paintings in the National Gallery and at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington D.C ; I now am fortunate to have some of his paintings, including an outstanding one that I have always loved, ever since I was a child, which he called The Frog Pond; This is the painting that is listed in the Corcoran catalog, which I also have.. ( Seventeenth Biennial Exhibition Of Contemporary American Oil Paintings March 23 to May 4, 1941 ...Catalog number 262).
