The following information is from Michael Glicksman, nephew of the artist.

Philip Illman was born in 1898, and died in 1992.  I've been told that he studied at the National Academy, NYC, and the Art Students' League, NYC.  He was a student, close friend and, I gather, sort of a protoge  of George Luks, with whom he shared a studio both in NYC ( I think, if my memory serves me correctly, it was in the Gramercy Park area), and also upstate in Old Chatham, NY.  (According to family lore, it was Luks who was largely responsible for Phillip's decision to marry my aunt Ruth, in spite of their mutual poverty, since it had become  apparent to George that Phillip was miserable whenever he spent time apart f  ...  Displaying 750 of 1537 characters.
