Tameya Kagi, (1851-1894)
Painter. Born in Japan in 1851. Kagi immigrated to the U.S. in 1875 and was the first Japanese artist to work in California. After settling in San Francisco, he was hired as an assistant to a measurement technician for a survey of the Pacific Coast. With his savings, he returned to San Francisco and studied at the School of Design while serving as an apprentice to Juan B. Wandesforde. Leaving California in 1889, he went to Berlin, Germany where he furthered his art studies until returning to Japan where he died in 1894.
