Sam Ladenson (1927-2004)
Early in Ladenson's career, he painted heavily from nature, focusing especially on grasses, then worked for a while on bottles and jars before moving into collages. Most of the middle and last years of his life he worked primarily on collages. The bulk of his remaining work is collage.
Born April 5, 1927, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Attends local public schools, then West Philadelphia High School.
1942 (age 15) visits studio of Philadelphia portrait painter Robert Susann, meets Susann's daughter Jacqueline (age 24), future author of Valley of the Dolls (etc.)
1945 enlists in Army, becomes Master Sergeant; sent to France and Germany at end of WWII. Involved in a jeep accident, spends some months in military hospital in France.
1947 honorably discharged from Army
c.1951 Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Studies with Walter Stuempfig (1914-1970); classmates include William Scharf, Chester Maxwell, and Chase Decker. Awarded Cresson Scholarship, studies in England and France (Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris).
1951 Marries Irene Akhimoff, moves to New York.
1958 Extended studies, painting and travels in Europe
