She studied art with Charles Woodbury and of their courtship it was written: "As beautiful as she was willful, she reduced Charles to adoring despair. Buttressed by Victorian decorum, he finally summoned the courage to say to her one day: 'Miss Oakes, I simply cannot teach you to paint, but if you will have me, I would like to marry you.'
