George W. Melville was born in Sandusky, OH on Feb, 28, 1856. Melville was active in Chicago in the 1890s. He is best remembered for panoramas of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 which he etched, colored, and published. He illustrated and published two books entitled, Chicago and The World's Fair and Twenty-Four Mayors of Chicago. He also did panoramas of the World's Fairs in St Louis, Portland, and San Francisco (1915).
His last years were spent as a resident of Hollywood where he served for many years as vestryman at St Thomas Episcopal Church. His suicide by cyanide poisoning was in Hollywood, CA on Nov. 30, 1928.
