Octavius Oakley (b.1800 / d.1867)

Oakley was born in Bermondsey on April 27, 1800.

Oakley's father was a London wool merchant.  With the intentions of going into the medical field, Oakley attended the school of Dr. Nicholas at Ealing.

Despite his academics Oakley worked with textile company, in Leeds.  After many drawings and portraits of acquaintances, Oakley left the business to pursue a professional career in art.

Oakley settled in Derby in c.1825.  Here, he painted water-colors of portraits.  After a stay in Leamington, Oakley moved to London in 1841.  He became a member of the Society of Painters in Water-Colors in 1844.  With this society, Oakley participated at all their 210 exhibits.  During this time, he was given the nickname of "Gipsy Oakley."  At the Royal Academy, Oakley occasionally exhibited from 1826 until 1867.

Octavius Oakley died in London on March 1, 1867.
