Violetta Constance Raditz

Biography from the Archives of askART

A child prodigy, at age eight Violetta Glemser did whimsical drawings that were exhibited at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.  Although an easel and mural painter, printmaker and designer, she is especially noted for her childhood work, which was rediscovered by the art world beginning in 1959.  Basically self taught, she grew up in an art-oriented household as her father was portrait painter, Lazar Raditz.

She moved to Ireland with her first husband William Flaccus and designed theater sets there. After returning to New York City, she opened her own design agency and exhibited her etchings and lithographs.  In 1945, after a divorce, she took a trip to Haiti, where she painted, using pastels as her medium.

She remarried in 1947 to Bernard Glemser, a novelist.

She worked as a designer in the bridal departments of Lord & Taylor and Bergdorf Goodman in the 1960s. Appears also as Flaccus.

Memberships included the Philadelphia Print Club, Philadelphia Art Alliance, and National Association of Women Artists.
