Robert E. L. Rainey was active/lived in Ohio, Mississippi.  Robert Rainey is known for paintings, screenprints, design, art education.

Robert E. L. Rainey

He was initially a watercolorist, specializing in rural and urban scences in the Midwest characterized by very strong color. (Shortly before his death, when asked by a clergyman to describe what he believed in, Rainey replied "Color.")  Later he originated a medium he called "petronexus" -- bas-relief paintings of wood, stone, jesso, and color.

Born 1914, Jackson, Mississippi, Rainey studied art at the School of the Chicago Art Institute (BFA, MFA).  He studied with F. Chapin, B. Anisfield, and cited as his major influence the work of Grant Wood.   He served as Director of the North Canton Little Art Gallery from 1947 to 1968, and from 1950 to 1984, he owned the Ad Scribe advertising agency.
