Biography from Scott F. Nussbaum Antiques

Mary Ann Xantippe Saunders

Born in Kentucky 1838, Died 1922 in Louisville,Kentucky

Xantippe, or Tip as she liked to be called was a Louisville portrait painter and teacher of art.  Tip also showed artistic talent early.  She had studied art in Louisville under Professor Cornelius Pering, who ran an art school in Louisville for many years.  His daughter, Cornelia Pering, also artistic, was a pupil in the school, and the two girls began a life-ling friendship.

Tip went on to New York, where she studied under Lemuel Everett Wilmarth and in the studio of Joseph O.Eaton.

In the early 1880's she and Cornelia opened an art school in Louisville and maintained it for over 20 years.  Miss Tip's specialty was portraits; Miss Cornelia's, miniatures.

Tip Saunders' cousin through a maternal grandmother, Pamela Goggin, was Mark Twain ( Samuel Clemens), and sometimes he came to Louisville to see his cousin and give public readings from his manuscripts.  In 1925 the Courier-Journal newspaper wrote: "She was a cousin of Mark Twain and possessed many of the same gifts of wit and humor with which he was endowed."

After Mark Twain's death, Xantippe Saunders was one of those called upon to supply his biographer, Albert Bigelow Paine, with data on early family history.
