Biography from the Archives of askART

Immaculata, Sister Mary  CSC    (1879 -1940)

Born in Cacheville, California, Anna Marie DuChene, she was the daughter of Justin and Scholastica Mary (Bedard) DuChene.  Upon her decision to follow her heart, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1899 in San Francisco, California.  Her date of Reception at St. Mary's of Notre Dame, Indiana, was given as December 8, 1899.  Her first Profession of Faith soon followed and she made her final decision to become a nun in 1905.

Her artistic education began at St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, and continued in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Cape Cod.

By 1907 Sister Immaculata was assigned as an "art teacher in studio," and in 1911 was given charge of the Art Department for St. Mary's College.  She held that position through 1931 before being assigned the Art Department at Holy Rosary Academy in Woodland, California, which she held until her retirement in 1934.

She is known to have exhibited twice with the Hoosier Salon.  A painting, Still Life, was shown in 1925.

Written and submitted by Edward P. Bentley, Art Researcher from Greenville, Michigan.
