Guido Odierna

Biography from the Archives of askART

Guido Odierna was a noted painter, born November 13th, 1913 in Capri, Italy, known for his seascapes in oil, landscapes, still lifes, botanical, coastal and fishing boat scenes in places such as Capri, Naples, Florence, Rome, the Amalfi coast and Venice to name a few.

Guido studied at the Royal Academy and with the great seascape painter Cavalier Michele Federico (Italian, 1884-1966), and also in the studio of well known artist Konstantin Ivanovich Gorbatov (Russian, 1876-1945) who was one of the outstanding painters of Capri (sometimes listed as Constantin Ivanovich Gorbatoff).  Guido loved the sea, and he interpreted and captured Capri with her fierce rocks and seaside cliffs along the translucent sea, the mountains of the Piemonte region (or Piedmont) which starkly rise into the blue sky, the golden glow of Rome and the mother of pearl hues of Venice--all with equal poetic passion.  His love of the sea shows in his seascapes where the waters take on their own personalities.  The waters of Capri, Trieste, Chioggia and Venice all feature prismatic impressions and sensations within his paintings along with expressed inspiration and fine technique—truly, a master of his palette and brush.  His paintings of Capri depict many different areas of the island and made up a large part of his body of work.

Guido lived in Capri and maintained his art gallery there throughout the summer season with his family.  During the winters, he maintained his other art gallery in Rome where he displayed and sold his own works along with other artists that he represented. His days were often characterized by taking long early morning walks with his two dogs which he thoroughly loved doing. When in Capri he would often climb down over the rocks to the sea and take in its majestic beauty which "…explains the underlying inspiration of the artist, his affinity with nature, his choice of companions whose gaze, rustling movements, or silence, is the language of understanding"[1].

Guido had over 35 solo exhibitions during his career in places such as Rome, Milan, Turin, Genoa, Biella, Vercelli, Catania, Trieste, and group exhibitions in France and the U.S. to name a few. Walter Meibohm would often visit Guido on his annual art buying trips to Europe and purchase many of his works along with other paintings by his represented artists. The Meibohm family maintained a wonderful working relationship and friendship with Guido even after Walter stopped traveling to Europe in the late 1970's. Guido's works can be found in numerous public, private and gallery collections around the world.

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following information was submitted in July of 2006 by Rex J. Goodwin:

I met Guido when on Capri in about September of 1958 as a young U.S. Naval Officer.  I had flown to Naples to await the arrival of my ship and had nine wonderful days of vacation.  I was on Capri and followed a beautiful Italian girl into an art gallery.  It was Guido's daughter.  I started talking with Guido, looked at some of his paintings and bought one for myself.  He explained that he also had a gallery in Rome but spent most of "the season" at Capri.

The following year, Virginia Beach had an art festival, its first I believe.  I wrote Guido and told him about the Festival and suggested he send me some paintings.  I proposed that I would sell them and then pay him.  Much to my surprise, within a few days, I received about 25-30 paintings; some by him, and others of artists featured in his galleries. I would imagine that this was the first time that his works were exhibited in the U.S.
I entered the Festival and sold all but about seven of the paintings, and kept the balance as gifts.  I no longer have any of his paintings but my sister has one and I gave one to a daughter as a wedding present in 1999.
