Antoine Sebastien Falardeau, later known as Le Chevalier Falardeau,
trained as an artist in Quebec. He was sent by his master Robert Todd to
study in Italy in 1846, and developed a growing reputation as a skillful
copyist. His work was noticed in Florence by the Duke of Parma and from
then he made incredible leaps in social rank. He married a niece of
Pope Pius IX and bought a Florentine Renaissance palace where he
received the Empress of Russia, royalty and the aristocracy who came to
admire his works.
