Biography
Nicolai Abracheff

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following was submitted by David Bancroft Avrick:

Nicolas was born in Bulgaria.  With his brother and fellow artist Ivan, he left Bulgaria and had success in Western Europe and in Argentina and Brazil, where they spent a great many years.

He launched his career in the 20s... he was close to a circle of young artists, poets and journalists.  He enrolled in the National Academy of Arts in Sofia and many works by both brothers are owned by the Museum, where an exhibition; "Two Bulgarians in America" featured their works.  Two of the pieces that were exhibited were then sent to Munich and Brussels to be exhibited as part of the Brothers and Sisters in Art show in 2005 (which also featured art by Duerer, Bruegel, Deschamps, etc.)

In Brazil he had great success and he and his brother are considered founders of modernism in that country.  They later left for the US.  They set up an art school, The Abracheff School of Art, and launched the Independent Gallery.

At the Apollonia Festival of Arts the Abracheff works were included from the private collection of Hristo Tepavicharov who met Abracheff when Tepavicharov was working at the United Nations in New York City.

I personally met Nicolai around 1970 in New York City.  When I first met him he had an art studio near Columbia University.  He later moved to the East Side of New York City.  He had an apartment in an apartment building with his school/studio on the first floor of the same building.  I assisted him financially during that period of time, and was fortunate to receive many of his paintings which I display in my home.  Unfortunately I was the person who called the police when he didn't respond to phone calls, they forced their way into his apartment, where he had died.

I had a magnificent bronze sculpture of a ballet dancer that was done by Ivan.  I donated it to Alvin Ailey during the years Alvin was trying to launch his dance company, which ultimately became the world's most successful dance company.

Ivan died in 1960 and Nicolai died in 1977.
