Recognized as an Intermedia artist creating collage, sculptural, conceptual and mixed-media art, Joyce Cutler-Shaw has also been an author of more than thirty publications, as well as the director and interviewer for art-related television programming.  

Cutler-Shaw was born in 1932 in Detroit, Michigan.  She attended New York University where she received her degree in 1953 and one year later began studying at the graduate level at Columbia University in New York.  In 1972, she earned her Master's degree in the Fine Arts from the University of California in San Diego.  She has served as a Visiting Artist at institutions in California and has also been a faculty member.  In 1979, she directed the founding of the Landmark Art Projects, Inc.

During the 1980s, Cutler-Shaw received a grant for development and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts which funded her "Museum of Seasonal Change" endeavor.  Prior to these awards, she was given funding from the United States Congressional Joint Committee and the California Arts Council for her "We the People" and television projects.

Since the 1970s, solo exhibitions of Cutler-Shaw's artwork have been held at a number of institutions such as the Apropos Gallery in Lucerne, Switzerland; Cornell University of Ithaca, New York; Los Angeles International Airport in California; National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.; Teylers Museum in the Netherlands; Seacrest Village Retirement Community in Encinitas, California; the School of Medicine at the University of California in San Diego; Sushi Performance Gallery of San Diego, California; and the Volt Corporate Park in Orange, California.  The type of work displayed in various shows has included her sculpture, drawing, collage, book, imaging and installation, as well as reading and performance art.  Group shoes which included her work have been organized by establishments within the United States, in areas such as Morgantown, West Virginia; Potsdam, New York; San Diego, California; Walnut, California; and Washington, D.C.  Group exhibitions outside of the United States have been held in areas including Bilbao, Spain; Brussels, Belgium; Budapest, Hungary; Liverpool, England; Mexico City, Mexico; Moscow, Russia; Normandie and Paris France; and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Cutler-Shaw's artwork is part of the permanent collections at institutions, such as Cornell University of Ithaca, New York; Guggenheim Museum in New York City; Klingspor Museum of Offenbach, Germany; Museum of Modern Art in New York City; Museum of Natural History in San Diego, California; Special Collections of the New York Public Library; Tate Gallery in London, England; Teylers Museum in the Netherlands; and the University of California at San Diego and at Santa Barbara.
