Guy Goodwin

Biography from the Archives of askART

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Guy Goodwin earned a BFA from Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama in 1963 and an MFA from the University of Illinois in 1965.  He taught Visual Art Painting at Wayne State in Detroit in 1978 and then at the University of Illinois.  From 1980, he was a teacher of art at Bennington College in Vermont but was basically active in New York art circles.

He has also been inspired by frequent trips to Chauncey, Ohio, from which he did abstract land-town scape works, heavily impastoed with stenciled letters and symbols and images of small town life. In the 1990s, he also began doing collage on fiberglass.

The following is from Helen Ziga, a former student of Guy Goodwin:
In 1996 Guy was hired by Ohio University to teach painting.  Since then he started a fantastic visiting artist program with guests such as Jessica Stockholder, Jenny Holzer, and Lucy Lippard.  He currently lives in Chauncey and had an exhibition of his Chauncey Flats series in NYC.  He lives and work between Chauncey, Ohio and NYC.
