Mary Obering was born in Shreveport Louisiana in 1937 and is currently
active. She studied at the University of Denver where she
received her MFA in 1971.
Obering divides her time between New York and Italy. Her work,
which combines traditional Renaissance techniques with rigorous
formalism, derived from American minimalism art and clearly reflects
her peregrinations.
Her current works favor the use of egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed
panels and are a true hybrid of painting and sculpture suggesting an
alchemical mystery and imperial elegance all in one.
She has been exhibiting around the world since 1971 and is in many
important public and private collections i.e. Wadsworth Atheneum,
Hartford, Connecticut; Museum Fine Arts, Boston , Massachusetts,
Muse de Arte, Costa Rica etc.
