A teacher at du Cret School of the Arts in Plainfield, New Jersey and
at the National Arts Club in New York City, Rhoda Yanow specializes in
figure and portrait painting. In 2005, she said that she had been
painting for thirty-five years and teaching for more than twenty.
Biography from Butler Institute of American Art
She paints with both watercolors and pastels in her studio from
sketches on 3 X 5 card that she makes when going about her daily life,
and she also uses a camera for reference shots.
Her talent with art has been evident since she was a child, and her
grandmother especially gave her encouragement. She studied at the
Parsons School of Design and the National Academy of Design in New York
City, and at the National Academy, changed her focus from commercial
art to fine art. Her teachers included Daniel Greene, Harvey
Dinnerstien and George Nama.
A second passion of Yanow's is ballet, and many of her paintings are
ballet dancers rehearsing or performing. She said: "I've done
portraits of the ballerinas and have watched some of them grow
up. The ballet has been very good to me."
Yanow is a member of the Pastel Society of America and the Allied
Artists of America. In 2003, her art was added to the collection
of the first-ever museum devoted to pastel in Suzhou, China.
