Rhoda Yanow

Biography from the Archives of askART

A teacher at du Cret School of the Arts in Plainfield, New Jersey and at the National Arts Club in New York City, Rhoda Yanow specializes in figure and portrait painting.  In 2005, she said that she had been painting for thirty-five years and teaching for more than twenty.

She paints with both watercolors and pastels in her studio from sketches on 3 X 5 card that she makes when going about her daily life, and she also uses a camera for reference shots.

Her talent with art has been evident since she was a child, and her grandmother especially gave her encouragement.  She studied at the Parsons School of Design and the National Academy of Design in New York City, and at the National Academy, changed her focus from commercial art to fine art.  Her teachers included Daniel Greene, Harvey Dinnerstien and George Nama.

A second passion of Yanow's is ballet, and many of her paintings are ballet dancers rehearsing or performing.  She said: "I've done portraits of the ballerinas and have watched some of them grow up.  The ballet has been very good to me."

Yanow is a member of the Pastel Society of America and the Allied Artists of America.  In 2003, her art was added to the collection of the first-ever museum devoted to pastel in Suzhou, China.
