Biography from the Archives of askART

The following is from Carole Le Beau, Scottsdale, Arizona:

Buck Saunders: Alvin Lee Saunders
Born August 10, 1907 in Portsmouth, Va.
Died February 29, 1988 in Scottsdale, AZ.
Occupation: Civil engineer, gallery owner and artist
Medium: watercolor, oil, pencil, pen & ink, silkscreen

Buck Saunders was a civil engineer and, among other things, was in charge of construction of the Kingman, Arizona, Gunnery Range in 1941 and the Veteran's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.  While he and his wife, Leobarda (Leo) were living in Phoenix, he opened the first art gallery in Scottsdale, "Scottsdale Trading Post" (Buck Saunders Gallery) on March 1, 1949.

Buck was president of the Arizona Artists Guild several years, and was on the first board of trustees of the Phoenix Art Museum before it was even built.

His work was shown and sold through shows of the Arizona Artists Guild, the California Guild, Arizona State Fair, and even the De Grazia Gallery in Tucson,
Arizona gave him a show.

He painted the landscapes and missions of Arizona, California, and New Mexico.  He also painted Michigan landscapes on a vacation there one summer in the 1950's.  Buck was credited for giving De Grazia his first one- man show in Scottsdale February 5, 1950.  He also gave the first one-man shows to Olaf Wieghorst and Pop Chalee.

Buck was active in the arts until his death, February 29, 1988.  His wife, Leo, continued to operate the gallery with the help of their long-time assistant, Carole Le Beau, until Leo's death November 25, 1999.
