Lyle Waggoner

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following biography was submitted by Galleries West Fine Art:

Lyle Waggoner gained national recognition as a regular performer on The Carol Burnett Show, where he appeared weekly for eight years.  He then co-starred for three years on the television series, Wonder Woman.  He has since retired from acting and taken up part-time residence in Jackson Hole.

Always artistically inclined, Waggoner decided to try his hand at sculpting a few years ago.  Under the supervision of nationally acclaimed sculptor, R. Scott Nickell, he produced his first sculpture.  In fact, Nickell went out of town at the time that Waggoner began his sculpture.  When he returned a couple weeks later, Waggoner brought a finished clay sculpture for his critique.  "I only gave him a few pointers on anatomy and technical considerations regarding mold-making.  He did everything on his own," says Nickell.

That first clay resulted in the sculpture, Modesty, a graceful nude posed in a discreet position.  His subsequent bronzes have taken a clever, almost tongue-in-cheek playfulness.  His second effort, titled Gettin' in Molly's Pants depicts a slender young woman slipping into her well-starched blue jeans.  Next came Ring Around Rosie, a cowgirl still wearing her hat in an old-time bathtub.  But Waggoner's clever ideas just kept coming.  Not to be outdone, Whoops!  See Daisy is a lithe cowgirl in a short dress, a gust of wind blowing up her skirt in back.  Soon to be added to the series will be The Happy Hooker, a proud woman in fishing gear, holding up the day's catch.

Lyle's sense of humor adds a unique touch to his distinctive bronzes.  His talent and playful spirit promise many more engaging sculptures in the future.
