Born in South Carolina of French parents on Jan. 15, 1838. Payot was 13 when he arrived in San Francisco with the Gold Rush. He worked for lithographers Quirot & Company and later had his own litho-engraving business called Payot, Upham & Company. Before the turn of the century he had made several world tours and trips to Japan of which he lectured locally. By 1907 he was a San Francisco supervisor and member of the board of education.
