Mary Carpenter

Biography from the Archives of askART

The following informatin was supplied in June of 2006 by Terry Carpenter:

Mary Carpenter, born in 1832 in Charlottesville, Virginia, was a water-color artist and decorative painter.  In an article about her family published in the Hamilton County [Ohio] Historical Society bulletin, it states "Mary conducted the first classes in water-color painting when the [Cincinnati] Art Museum began such a program.  She also worked as an artist at the famous Rookwood Pottery [in Cincinnati].  Some of her first pieces later were placed on exhibit in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts."   She was a daughter of Ira Carpenter, who was born 26 Jun 1798 at Guilford, VT.  He migrated to Charlottesville, Albemarle Co. VA in the 1820s to become a schoolteacher and there married on 18 Dec 1829 to Charlotte Littleford, daughter of the operator of the school in which he taught.  The family moved to Cheviot, Hamilton Co. OH in 1836, where Ira taught at the 7th District school in Cincinnati for some years before becoming an itinerant lecturer and proponent of Masonry.
