Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Carolyn Hutchings Edlund began her painting career focusing on the New England landscape.
Raised in Rhode Island, art was an obsession in her developmental
years. At the age of eleven she began formal study with the late
Charles Gordon Harris. She received a Bachelors Degree from the
University of Rhode Island in Kingston, RI. Following graduation she
moved to the Mid-Hudson Valley in New York State where formal education
continued under the tutelage of Nguyen Tri Minh, Franklin Alexander
(Woodstock, NY), and the Art Students League.
In the early 1980s she moved to Buckinghamshire, England where she
lived for four years. Frequent excursions to London's art museums
afforded time for studying the great masters. While a resident there, her
paintings were exhibited at galleries and commissions were undertaken.
She is known for intimate romanticism in landscapes. She was highly
influenced by the Hudson River School of painters, in particular George
Inness, Albert Bierstadt, William Trost Richards, and the drawings of
Her paintings are in collections in Canada, England, Germany, France, Italy, and the United States.
