The following information was submitted in August of 2006 by the artist:
My focus on conservation and preservation of natural habitats of plants and wildlife as well as cultures and traditions around the world has lead to exploration of other elements such as pictographs, petroglyphs, symbols, and hieroglyphs. Dealing with these subject matters has taken me on journeys of discovery and challenge. I have explored cloud forests in Central America; coral reefs of the Caymen Islands and other under water sites; pueblos and villages of natives: ancient sites of archeological findings of Anazazi and other ancient people. I create art to try to bring attention to these precious places. I hope my focus on these places, in some small way, will generate interest to them. Equally important to me is to bring awareness to preserving cultures and traditions in our increasingly homogenous societies.
I approach my work differently for each piece of art. Often I paint or work on a subject in a straightforward way using traditional media such as oil or watercolor, representing directly what is in front of me. I enjoy painting with large brushes in a loose manner, not trying to copy what is at hand, but rather render a subject artistically and creatively. At other times I let the painting lead me where it will, using whatever materials and media may be available. I incorporate layering techniques, usually stamping, printing, wiping, tearing and other methods in evolving the art. When I allow a painting to evolve in this manner, I most often do not have a subject in mind. It is the actual journey that I desire. Making a painting in this manner allows me to become totally absorbed in creativity and the content is more important that representation. I work until I am satisfied and if the viewer is impacted, it is an added affirmation of the work.
My work has been awarded major honors and been accepted in national and international exhibitions. I have had more than fifty solo exhibitions. I have been commissioned to create book covers and illustrations for authors; art for corporate catalogue covers; art for posters; designs for business logos and product logos; note cards and invitations. My work is in collections in the United States, Mexico, Canada, England, Wales and Egypt. I am a teacher, lecturer, curator and juror as well as a published author.
