Biography from the Archives of askART

The following text was submitted and written by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California:

Julio Galan was born in 1959, the son of an influential family in Monterrey, Mexico.  He was something of a child prodigy, surrounding himself with a wall-to-wall make believe world of dolls.  His outrageous paintings based on colorful Mexican folklore combine a Frida Kahlo-like frankness with his own acute sense of melodrama.

Galan spent a large part of his childhood on his grandfather's mining estate in Muzquiz, in the northern state of Coahuila, which has one of the largest bear preserves in the world.  That accounts for the powerful animism in his early work, along with his inclusion of the effete doll collection.

Mostly to please his father, Galan studied architecture in Monterrey from 1978 to 1982, all the while pursuing his painting.  In 1984 he left for New York and the world of Andy Warhol in the East Villege, as well as galleries and museums all over Europe.

Galan has capitalized on his Mexican  heritage even as he has become a world-class artist.  His outlook has been international from the outset, largely due to his country's rich multicultural past and his own privileged upbringing.  His art also strives toward a deliberately precious and sometimes obnoxious cult of the self all of which it is hoped does not offend public sensibilities.
