From Salt Lake City, the oldest of eight children, Rebecca Wagstaff was
raised in Utah a family that valued education. She enrolled in
Brigham Young University as a premed student focused on obstetrics, but
after taking a watercolor class, switched to art. Then following
an interest she developed in Arno Werner, a Connecticut German
bookbinder, she moved to New York City where she took a nanny job and
then contacted Werner. She then became his apprentice, and
combined this with her nanny employment.

In college, she met her future husband, Clay Wigstaff, an artist, and
they married in 1991 while she was working for Werner. However,
she ultimately discontinued the bookbinding, and moved with Clay to
Bryce, Utah, where they share a large studio, and raise their two
