Mary Helen Carlisle

A painter born in Grahamstown, South Africa on Nov. 20, 1869, Mary Carlisle was educated in England and studied art in Paris for five years at the Académie Julian under Bouguereau, Robert-Fleury, and Benjamin Constant.

While studying there, she won several medals for her artwork. After the turn of the century, she toured widely in the U.S. and was active in California from about 1911-15.

Her oeuvre includes miniatures, landscapes, garden subjects and portraits. The last decade of her life was spent in New York City. Unmarried, she died there on March 17, 1925.
